Waybury Inn Great Stays, and Cuisine

Bob Newhart knew a good thing when he found it. He made the Waybury Inn his choice for shooting his TV show at this early American institution. The Inn has been around from stagecoach days as early as 1810, and kept open continually through two centuries. Fully remodeled by current owners Tracy Getty and Joe Sutton, food and accomodations veterans, husband and wife team, the Inn for the last 13-years has especially excellent fare for Inn guests and locals too! We had a chance to try their trout almondine and a salmon entree’ and we were a whole lot more than pleased!
The immaculate grounds and the service from their friendly staff made us and as it shown through, other guests feel right at home. This great place is also pet friendly as it is people friendly. Located in East Middlebury, Vermont, we had our slice of excellent desserts and cool, refreshing air to forever remember our hosts great hospitality. While at the Waybury we visited the incredibly interesting Shelburne Museum and the Morgan Horse Farm. Together with a visit to a Teddy Bear Factory we had plenty to marvel over and do in the two days we spent at the Inn and surrounding areas.
The Inn serves dinner nightly and has a Pub too! Contact the Waybury Inn at 802-388-4015 or 800-348-1810 also check iout their website at www.wayburyinn.com.

Note* this entry is a work in progress, stay tuned for a bevy of images and additional copy about the Waybury Inn!! We are traveling so far and fast our computer keys can’t keep up with us.

THE UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT MORGAN HORSE FARM

We stepped back in history as we visited the Morgan Horse Farm, 215-acres in the lush agricultural area of Addison County, Vermont.

We were visiting a National Historic Landmark and getting up close to Americas first breed of horses, the Morgan. The farm is located at 74 Battell Drive in Weybridge, VT. off of Morgan Horse Farm Road. In 1878, Joe Battell built that fab main barn seen in the image at left. He built it to house his assembly of the era”s finest Morgan Horses.

The 20-year old Morgan stud is son of a 4-time Best Horse In America Award Winner. Morgan walk and trot high-legged and are absolutely beautiful to watch standing still or moving. They are truly “poetry-in-motion” and I believe that is where that term comes from. The large Morgan Monument horse sculpture says it all. Morgan is the King of horses in Vermont and most of the rest of the world.

The barn has a gift shop full of horse emblazoned wearing apparel and other souvenirs. A full Morgan skeleton is displayed to show the unusual conformity of this horse and how it was bred to be able to lift it’s legs higher than any other breed for parading and carriage use.

A visit here will sure please anyone who loves beauty-in-motion in the guise of the finest equestrian horse-flesh, period!

INN AT BUCK HOLLOW FARM A WINNER!

After migrating north like a pair of love-birds from S. Florida and our home in East Tennessee we alighted at a fine B&B Resort. We like B&B’s as their initial is the same as ours Bob and Barb.

But all B&B Inn’s are not the same, they are a factor of their owners personalities. The Inn At Buck Hollow has great owners, Brad and Jacquie Schwartz, together with their 400-acre property, their 4-unit Inn is extremely bright and comfortable and solar powered too! We are here for two nights and wish we had time for 5-more. The slate floor in the common room, antiques, early American folk-art, clocks and windows that look out to a forest replete with deer and at least two moose is rather exceptional for us. To be a part of  this place for even those two days and nights was delightful. We had lemon pancakes for breakfast with their own home manufactured maple syrup. The coffee; Green Mountain of course, said Brad Schwartz, Innkeeper. Along with his artist, vegan wife, Brad has had this property and developed it (not the land, it’s kept in it’s original wild state) into a great Inn. A heated pool, hot tub, miles of walking trails, very pet friendly, a full blown sugar house operates during sap-season (you can purchase various sizes of maple syrup jugs too) we bought syrup as gifts for our sweet teeth and friends too when they come over for waffles and pancakes! Breakfast like Cheri made for us at the Inn. Wow! It was great!

Get in touch with the Schwartz’s and and “let the Schwartz be with you”  at 800-849-7985 or

802-849-2400 also check out their website at:www.buckhollow.com and if you see the moose Brad will give you a gallon of their maple syrup. Oh, and don’t forget the antique treasures and Jacquie’s incredible window art, also for sale at the Inn.

For dinner we chose to go based on the Inn’s recommendation to Jeff’s Bar and Grill Restaurant. What a great choice! Melinda Chadwick delivered a great fresh lobster dinner, terrific tasting spinach salad,a portobello stuffed-with-crab,  mushroom and a fish chowder to make you want to go back for again! Final Cut Steakhouse Located At the Hollywood Casino, at Penn National Race Course

Probably the very best piece of steak Barbara and I have experienced, was at the Final Cut Steak House.  The steak: Blackmore Wagyu beef, a family owned business pioneered the production of 100-percent full-blood, Wagyu beef in Australia, more than 20-years ago. For full story on this beef product: go www.blackmorewagyu.com.au/

We couldn’t believe the taste or tenderness and the finest flavor, without any sauces, we have ever tasted. A four-ounce cut is a real treat! We also enjoyed feasting on king crab that was just wonderful too! I tried their onion soup and scallops to cry for!  For dessert, Executive Chef Jason Clark sent out his chocolate special-to describe it would be difficult, but to say that we left any of it over, would be a lie.

Can we recommend this fine restaurant? Absolutely! You can go gamble and take a chance, or and also spend your hard earned dollars on a true gourmet meal, and not gamble at all. if you don’t wish to.  You can take in the thoroughbred, horse racing, or sip some wine and taste some appetizers at the Final Cut Steakhouse, that is only about a 15-minute drive from Hershey. Try the scallops! But don’t call me call the Guiness World Record people.go: www.hollywoodpnrc.com and or call 717-469-2211

AACA Museum A Great Auto, Bus, & Motorcycle Museum

We really tripped out here!

A collection of anything old is fun and interesting, but transportation and vehicles of the past really grabs us all.

We immediately conjure and remember the backseats of the old Buicks, Chevy’s, Dodges, Model A’s if were old enough, even Model T’s. We are transported back in time when we were young, foolish and maybe even less of a hurry about life, it’s greatness, joy and tribulations. Hershey made this museum possible, as his empire made so much else possible-but even more a reality!

Barb and I went down memory lane here. I owned a few of the oldies shown here in their true colors and original conditions-we all did.

We spent about an hour, and in the spirit of nostalgia there were many bittersweet memories remembered in a haze of time and place. Would we recommend this place for a visit? Absolutely yes!

Go find the one wonder of your previous, youthful time on earth, that special car or cycle, that bus you rode out west, or down east, or south, or north on. Find out where that jalopy finally went to. Was it the junkyard for recycling, or to this emporium of automotive, earlier American industrial arts?  Go: www.aacamuseum.org or call 717-566-7100

Harrisburg, PA National Fire Fighting Museum, A Gem Of a Learning Experience

The history of fire-fighting in America can be found in a little known museum in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. We found it, and here is where every American and foreign visitor alike, should visit for a real in-depth look at America’s past. Men pulled and they pushed, pumped their arms to aching points, dashed hither and fro, along with locals carrying leather buckets of water to keep the pumper charged with enough water to pump at the fires of yesteryear. Today, big mechanical, hydraulic, diesel powered behemoths rush at breakneck speed to a fire with men and women outfitted with state of the current art in fire-suits and breathing equipment to douse fires and save lives too! During early American times it was muscle power that did the work. No fancy, great equipment and fires raged far more frequently in buildings of stick and timber.

Barb and I were enthralled at the steam pumpers, hand cranked and pumped wooden machines that were used in days of yore. The visit gave new perspective even to me, as I was a volunteer fireman in both Vermont for 9-years, and the Florida Keys for 9-years. This museum truly opened my eyes as to the advances made in water delivery and pumping powers. I enjoyed my hour there. You will too!  The museum is located at 1820 North Fourth St. in Harrisburg, PA. Contact John Wagner at 717-232-8915 or go the the web address: www.pnfm.org

Hershey Gardens in Hershey, PA. A Tribute to a Beloved Woman and the World

Hershey Gardens Worth a long, caring look at one mans dedication to his wifeWe always enjoy stopping to smell the roses, and at the Hershey Gardens we were glad we didn’t miss doing this while in Hershey, PA. The gardens are a reflection of how much love there was and can be between a husband and wife. The gardens are  located just below the famous Hershey Hotel. Barb and I had a his and hers massage and spa pampering at the hotel spa. Totally invigorated we chose to take in the gardens with a walk-through that finished off one of the finest days of our month long “On The Road Again” adventure. Would you like to be bathed in chocolate and massaged until all the stresses and muscle knots dissolve? Well, this all is in the realm of reality here at Hershey’s incredible kingdom, of the sweetest of the sweet experiences in America. We visited the Hershey Museum (definitely worth the time) where we learned how the “man” failed 5-times in his pursuit to become successful in the sweet world of confections and chocolate. But, he persevered and the 6th difficult effort paid off ultimately into a kingdom of “good” for him, his family and for many other thousands of people from all walks of life. To learn more about this generous, intelligent and entrepreneurial human being go:  www.hersheypa.com.  Plan a visit, you and the whole family will be thrilled!

We Reached Northern Vermont From Hershey PA. And Found Our Cottage

We woke to a 50-degree morning at a cottage in Fletcher, Vermont in mid-May. We drove 400-miles from Hershey, PA. to get there. The cottage was across the road from a pond. It (the pond) was really a lake, we heard birds calling out the morning mantra of chirps, screeches and invitations to flirt. There was a quietude over the tree-lined pond-lake that had a dark border reflection of all those maples, oaks and white birch, that reminded me of those places I always miss when I have to head for anywhere, but my favorite wild places.

Our cottage belongs to Steve and Lisa Carlson, they offer cottages in Fletcher and Hinesburg, Vermont. Kind and gentle folks, although we  never met them, they were fine hosts. We just showed up after telephoning them of our need to just relax and write. We wanted quiet, peace and water. We found it here in Fletcher at Metcalf Pond,  where we could use their rowboat or canoe, fish, or just exercise our arms on the water. The cottage had it all: wireless, and up and down bathroom,  plenty of hot water-even a hot tub! Their water-front beach and recreation area was a great place to sit and relax. It rained so we didn’t get to take advantage of this, but families coming to their places in both Fletcher and Hinesburg as spring turns to summer, will love it. Kids can take the little nets and catch water-critters and pop and mom can just relax, fish, or paddle their children around on the pond. The kitchen had the essentials for breakfast and the TV worked great, especially nice when their is inclement weather to deal with. If you want quiet and no-nonsense, comfortable beds, this place works great!
